gesprek

Titels van projecten: ‘geduvel in de liefde’, ‘be quiet’, ‘the great women master piece’, ‘mannelijk naakt en andere kwetsbaarheden’, ‘back’, ‘care for me’, ‘for all we know’, ‘for all we (don’t) know’, ‘what about the suffering’ en ‘for all we embrace’.

Het raakt aan maatschappelijke kwesties.

materiaal

stadsprojecten

conversation

‘…I create to understand life. To start the conversation, first with myself. Later with the other. I investigate. And consider what leads to the depths. As a possible direction. Images come up. An opinion shifts –

this is how the soul talks – with me as maker – and with everyone who wants to know, who then understands that work’

drawings – multi-media installations

Drawings, screen prints, text and poetry (often combined into spatial installations) and more recent work: sculptures and urban projects.

Her video films explore movement and light and rhythm and their emotional meaning. And stirring souls with her drawings.

sculptures

Sculptures seem to have been raised from the earth. They are made from newspapers during the lockdown (Newspaper Headlines) because wood from the forest was not available. Title: FOR ALL WE KNOW was on loan in the House of Representatives building for months (2020/2021).

In the second lockdown (2021), a series of ‘krantenkoppen’ (newspapers on plaster) with the title FOR ALL WE (DON’T) KNOW brought about a new philosophical conversation. About ‘not knowing’ – and what that brings about in attitude (subsidized by the CBK -PPR scheme). She worked on this project with philosopher Peter Saarloos, who wrote the essay: The Purifying Doubt, Rotterdam 2021.

FOR ALL WE EMBRACE (a project from 2021 – 2022) is a city-traveling project (2022 -2023) subsidized by Foundation Droom en Daad and the Bekker-La Bastide Foundation.

Her work is a reflection on society.

Fascinating issues are explored and reduced to what matters – as a result of research and progressive insight -; essential image or word. Sometimes it is thin: with few resources. Boundaries and their fragility (also of the medium itself) are explored. Simplicity. Humour. Lyrical sometimes.

Sometimes it is raw and direct.

The projects and exhibition concepts question man’s existence, emotions, desires and what lies behind them – or what that brings to the inner and outer world and what we should do with it? Her vision is that dwelling on emotions and feeling through them takes us on the path of intuition, the spiritual and the growth of our consciousness. She has been working with a shaman since 2016.

Titles of projects: ‘playing around in love’, ‘be quiet’, ‘the great women master piece’, ‘male nudity and other vulnerabilities’, ‘back’, ‘care for me’, ‘for all we know’, ‘ for all we (don’t) know’, ‘what about the suffering’ and ‘for all we embrace’.

It touches on social issues.

material

She prefers to work with natural materials or recycled materials (plaster, rope, newspapers, wood).

city projects

The social public domain has recently become a working area (end of 2021 – 2023). These are EU city projects commissioned by the Province of Zeeland. Focused on a specific problem or objective, we bring out the grass-root ideas of participants, guide their development in dialogue, write plans with the groups in the city and help them in their development and implementation. In consultation or collaboration with others in the city (officials, administrators, institutions, experts).

In this way, art can serve as an instrument for reflection on social and political changes in the context and in the interests of a city. With its inhabitants, visitors, entrepreneurs, its spaces and its nature. And then things of significance, large or small, may shift.

where to see

Work has been shown in the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Artstore Kunstambassade Rotterdam, De Aanschouw, De Wereld van de Witte de With, CBK Zeeland, Film Festival by the Sea, Ro theater Rotterdam, Kunstweekend Charlois, Galerie Frank Taal, Route du Nord, WolfartProject space, Dordrechts Museum, Poetry International, GRAW, Vestingval Elburg, Art Week Rotterdam and in the House of Representatives of the States General.

The city projects are in Vlissingen, Middelburg, Goes, Terneuzen and Hulst.

Karin works and lives in Rotterdam. And works in Zeeland.

As a visual artist she is registered with the CBK www.cbkrotterdam.nl. She rents her studio from SKAR www.skar-ateliers.nl.
